Sisters of Mercy Health System to Require GS1 Labeling

This is important news. It is taken from this November 2008 edition of Healthcare Purchasing News.

Resource Optimization & Innovation (ROi), the Sisters of Mercy Health System’s (Mercy) supply chain operating division, is taking a landmark step in the healthcare industry by adding specific terms to contract language requiring the use of GS1 standards in transactions and in production processing.

This is important because Mercy consists of 18 acute care hospitals, a heart hospital, outpatient care facilities, physician practices, skilled nursing and long-term residential care facilities, clinics, a managed care organization and other health-related services… it operates facilities and services in a seven-state area encompassing Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. Health System services are provided by approximately 29,500 co-workers and 4,000 physicians. To my way of thinking, this is not like the announcements of late featuring GS1 adoption by group purchasing organizations and healthcare-related agencies. This is coming from an actual healthcare provider.

Resource Optimization & Innovation (ROi) is the for-profit entity through which the Sisters of Mercy Health System will conduct its direct contracting and group purchasing activities. But it appears very much a part of the Sisters of Mercy Health System.

  1. Chris,
    Good Post,
I agreed this is an important event. The first IDN that publically shared this information in a press release,
Other IDNs are sending individual dear supplier letters but have not shared their intent in the press.

I am confuded ? What is your definition of a healthcare related agency? Do you mean association?
    regards john
