Today’s news brings an item about a couple of Massachusetts hospital systems adopting a solution that, according to the news release, utilizes a computerized sponge counting system that consists of individually bar-coded surgical sponges and a portable scanner that enhances traditional manual sponge counts.

In the neighboring state of Massachusetts this week, the Commonwealth announced it will no longer pay for costs associated with certain “serious reportable health-care events” such as wrong-side surgery. The state also will forbid its providers to bill members for such expenses.
